Last Day of Practicum!

Nothing exciting happened today.

I helped the students with their morning worksheets and then was taken out for IRI. The students said bye to us.

I will miss them, but luckily I get to go on a field trip with them next Friday!!!!!!!! We are going to the Monticello Train Museum! Oh happy day!

Day 13!

I cannot believe that tomorrow is already our last day of practicum! I feel as though I could have done so much more than I did! There is never enough time.
Speaking of time, I have so much left to do before the end of the semester!!

I tested my student with the IRI today. She did well again. I just have to kind of back track tomorrow, but hopefully the first oral reading was just her nerves...

The student who told me "DUH" yesterday wrote me an apology today. Mrs. Fouts said that his mom makes him write them a lot! It was cute.

Another little boy complimented my hair, shirt, and necklace. Then he told me he loves me! It was really sweet!

Day 12!

I completed more of my IRI today! It went well.

I asked a little boy what he put in his backpack and he responded, "It's a gold slip duh!" And I was so shocked! Luckily Mrs. Fouts heard this and told him he cannot talk to a teacher that way! She also made him move himself from green to red. He started to cry. She took a long time talking to him. Before Brittany and I left for IRIs, she asked him to apologize to me. She said it with him and made him look at me. I told him that I accepted his apology and we forgot about it the rest of the day.

There is a lot of crying that goes on in Kindergarten...

Day 11!

Today I started my IRI. The girl that I have is very nice and I am glad her teacher let me borrow her for a half hour a day for the rest of the week. It just makes me miss my kindergartners! I miss the best part of each morning: the morning routine! It was the only time her teacher let me assess her. :(

We found out today that a boy is getting his tonsils out and he will be missing approximately 2 weeks of class! He has been crying a lot lately and I think it is because he is scared and not feeling well. Poor little boy!

Day 10!

Today was the first day back from Spring Break, picture day, and my observation!

The students were not hyper at all! I thought they would be very talkative and not wanting to learn, but they were very calm. I taught most of the morning routine, until my students had to take their pictures. When we returned, I taught my lesson in math. We learned about number scrolls. It was successful! My students were eager to answer questions and were focused on their number scrolls!

During reading groups, I played the apple sight word game with my students. Mrs. Fouts took some students aside to test them for midterms. When she rang the bell to switch, two little boys were comparing how many apples they had. I told them that the point of the game is to understand and read the words, not to have the most apples. The one boy had less and started to cry. I took him in the hallway to get a drink and he drink and calm down. I explained the game to him and told him that he could not cry around me! I said he can only smile. We took deep breathes together and he gave me 2 hugs. After the second hug, he started to smile and giggle! It made me feel so good!

I think Kindergarten is growing on me! :)

Day 9!

Today was the last day of the second week of school, the day before Easter Break, and April Fool's Day!

Today was fun! I wish I could have stayed this afternoon because the students were having an Easter Egg Hunt!

Today Mrs. Fouts rearranged the tables and some of the student's seats. She said that it would be better to transition them today rather than after Spring Break. They do not adapt well to change. They like routine and need it. When the students came in, they were all commenting on where they were sitting and how the tables looked like an I. When it was time to send the students to the centers, she called the original yellow table and then the orange table. The girl who sat at the the original yellow table was so confused when she called both colors because she said that she sat at the yellow table and now sits at the orange table. I had to clearify it to her.

Kindergartners NEED routine!

Day 8!

I cannot believe that tomorrow is the last day of the second week! Practicum has gone by so fast and I feel like there is so much that I need to do!

Mrs. Fouts talked to a 3rd grade teacher at Riddle about the IRIs. The teacher is letting Brittany and I take a student and assess them. After we talked to the teacher, she went to her office and made a letter to the parents of the two students and explained that we will be coming in to assess them! Brittany and I were impressed that this teacher was so on-top of it! It seems like every teacher at Riddle is very organized!

Mrs. Fouts found out just this morning, from a letter from a parent, that a boy in our class is moving TOMORROW, and his last day of school was TODAY! This was shocking and really sad news!

Brittany and I are doing a great job of getting involved in as much as possible! We are learning so much! We also are getting useful materials!

While we were in small group for part of the math lesson, a boy was not paying attention and he was touching everything that around him. I asked him several times to pay attention. It got to the point where he was being so silly that I told him he needed to move his name to yellow. He said "no". So Mrs. Fouts did it for him. He was not happy. Mrs. Fouts showed me the form she fills out when a student is moved on the behavior chart. It was a little yellow sheet of paper titled "Oops I was not behaving.." She writes what the student did to be moved and the parent has to sign it. I felt bad, but this student has been silly all week. (I think it is because break is so close.)

Brittany and I played our apple site word game with some of our students during reading groups and they loved it! :)

One little boy told me he loved me and another on blew me a kiss from across the room.... they are so cute! :)
